Good old-fashioned earnestness

And why it should matter to you

The word "earnestness" sounds a bit old-fashioned, so I looked up how frequently we use it now compared to the past. This is what I found.

Then, I had a new question, "Are we less earnest than we used to be or just not using the word?" especially in interpersonal relationships. We seem more earnest in other spheres of life, like innovation and career. Some people commit wholeheartedly to environmental protection, animal rights, antiwar causes, social justice, etc. That's great, of course, but if we lack earnestness in interpersonal relationships, wouldn't it be a bad thing?
