Limerence – getting emotionally stuck between uncertainty and hope

You may not know the word, but you've probably experienced the feeling. It happens to everyone in love or infatuated when, for whatever reason, the object of their affection ends up out of reach. Most people move on. Some get stuck. Limerance for them may become a way of life. Think Miss Havisham from Great Expectations, the famous Charles Dickens novel (Let's see who still reads, and who's going to Google it.) And just like in the novel, in extreme situations it causes people to turn into strange characters.

Limerence, whether it's about "the one that got away" or the one that never "became," messes up lives. So, let's look at what limerence looks like, psychologically and behaviorally, what some real-life consequences are, and what to do to break free.
