I don't know why I had to travel to the other side of the world to remind myself of this classic truth – wherever you go, there you are. Today, I had to navigate the rabbit hole of Bulgarian bureaucracy as I needed a piece of paper from one authority to show another authority my entries and exits in and out of the country to get another piece of paper that would let me have my stuff when they arrive ten weeks from now via a boat without paying duty.

I am used to fewer pieces of paper and easier ways of figuring out where to get them. Like the Internet! Ask Google, and you shall find. Not here. I Googled the county's main police directorate and drove across town. I expected a big building with an information station or someone there answering questions and pointing people in the right direction.
