What just happened in Venezuela is extraordinarily dangerous, legally weak, and strategically reckless, even if one accepts every criticism of Maduro’s regime. You can oppose Maduro and still see this as a major escalation that crosses lines the U.S. has generally avoided since the Cold War.

The legal problem is not a technicality. It is the core issue. The statement “we are going to run the country” implies de facto occupation.

This triggers three problems simultaneously.

First, U.S. constitutional law. Congress has not authorized war, occupation, or regime administration. The strike on Venezuela goes well beyond past gray-zone actions, like targeted strikes, hostage rescues, and limited operations. If allowed to stand, it sets a precedent for unilateral executive takeover of foreign states.
